The American Plate

A century of what one American had available to eat, in pounds. Walk 1909 → 2022 across 71 tracked foods and 50 commodities. Watch the plate reorder — chicken passing beef, tropicals arriving, the potato changing form.

Every number is pounds available per person per year — USDA ERS food availability (production + imports − exports − non-food/loss). It is a national supply-side proxy for consumption, never a measured intake, never a price, never a forecast. Figures are published at the commodity level, so a cut or variety carries its parent commodity's per-capita figure.

Schema. Raw .jsonl (CC0, one JSON object per line): {group, commodity, year, attribute, value}value in lbs per capita per year. Derived .json (CC-BY, Muntin): items[] of {slug, commodity, group, percap_lbs, latest_year, span, series:[[year, lbs]]}. span is first..last year of coverage; missing early years are true absence, never zero.
